As I’ve been building my health coaching business I’ve also tried to find software development work. Over the past year I thought I’d see more people interested in improving their health, and with considerable time at home now, would be interested in hiring health coaches. This turned out to not exactly be the case as people hunkered down at home, so over the past year I have ramped up my efforts to find software development work. I have over 20 years of experience in this line of work, so it seems to me it shouldn’t be that difficult.

Over the past 18 months I've applied to 105 jobs on Monster. This is in addition to tens of other jobs I've applied to on craigslist, Hired, Dice, LinkedIn, and ZipRecruiter. I get contacted almost daily by one or more recruiters who have found my resume "in the system" which apparently matched some keywords for which they searched. I've had numerous interviews during this time and none of them have resulted in a job offer. I've never had to schedule this many interviews between jobs. This automated job matching is not working for me.

What I’m looking for.

  • 100% Remote work from my home office in Mount Vernon, WA. I am not interested in relocating. Not even after the pandemic is considered over. No, I’m not interested in commuting to Seattle.

  • I prefer maintenance programming and working on legacy systems to writing brand new systems from scratch. I enjoy debugging complex systems and getting to the bottom of problems that others haven’t been able to solve. I like writing documentation detailing how things work and how to work on them when they break. I find refactoring functionality into small pieces that do one thing well makes for more easily maintainable software and decreases the time it takes to fix bugs and implement new features.

  • Java software development. Java is my favorite programming language and the one with which I have the most professional experience.

  • Steady employment with a small to medium sized company. I’m open to contracting or part time work, but I would prefer salary.

  • A company that values and leverages open source software. I’m not interested in working in an environment heavy in Microsoft products. I work best in a Linux friendly environment where software development and deployment tools can easily be automated.

What I’m avoiding.

  • “Working in a fast paced environment with rapidly changing priorities.” If that describes your company it means you don’t have a plan and the software developers are probably scrambling to implement features that your sales team has already sold to prospective clients. I’ve worked in that environment before. No thanks.

  • NodeJS. I find this platform painful and is something I no longer wish to work with.

  • Ruby. Seems like a neat computer science experiment.
